Residents across Pueblo and southern Colorado are being urged to prepare early after a Monday warning from the National Weather Service highlighted the risk of strong to potentially damaging winds expected on Wednesday. While conditions remain calm to start the week, forecasters say an upper-level jet stream will move into the region, creating an environment favorable for wind gusts reaching 75 mph or higher, especially in and near the mountains and along the I-25 corridor.

The highest risk period currently appears to be Wednesday afternoon and evening, when strong west winds could produce dangerous crosswinds, particularly for high-profile vehicles such as semis, RVs, and trailers. Travel along Interstate 25 could become hazardous, with sudden gusts capable of pushing vehicles out of their lanes.

Forecast confidence is growing, but some uncertainty remains regarding how widespread the strongest winds will be and how far east they may extend. Even so, the National Weather Service emphasizes that impacts could include downed trees, power outages, and property damage, especially if gusts exceed the 58 mph threshold that defines damaging wind events.

Ahead of Wednesday, residents are encouraged to take precautions beginning Monday and Tuesday. This includes securing loose outdoor items, such as trash bins, patio furniture, and holiday decorations, which could become airborne in strong winds. Those with travel plans midweek should closely monitor updated forecasts and be prepared to adjust schedules if necessary.

Emergency managers also advise preparing for the possibility of brief power disruptions, particularly in wind-prone areas west of I-25. As the event approaches, forecast details will be refined, including the exact timing and intensity of the strongest gusts.
