Pueblo, CO – A man already in custody on unrelated warrants has now been charged with first-degree murder in last week’s deadly stabbing in Pueblo West, according to the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office .
Detectives obtained an arrest warrant Monday for 38-year-old Shawn Thomas Brotherton, accused in the November 18 killing of 46-year-old Scott Valencia of Pueblo West. Brotherton was officially booked on the new homicide warrant Monday night and is being held on a $1 million cash-only bond.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called around 9:50 p.m. on November 18 to a home in the 300 block of E. Stewart Drive for a reported stabbing. Before deputies arrived, they learned Valencia had been driven to a local hospital by a resident of the home, where he was later pronounced dead.
Witnesses told investigators the two men had been in an argument that escalated into a physical fight, ending with Valencia being stabbed. Detectives recovered a knife believed to be the weapon in the attack.
The next day, on November 19, detectives located and interviewed Brotherton. He allegedly claimed the stabbing was an act of self-defense. After the interview, detectives discovered he was wanted on three outstanding warrants unrelated to the incident and booked him into the Pueblo County Jail.
Further investigation led detectives to secure a new homicide warrant on November 24. Brotherton now faces a charge of first-degree murder in Valencia’s death.
