Pueblo, Colo. – Colorado’s late summer heat will peak again Friday before a strong front ushers in thunderstorms and cooler air for the weekend, raising concerns for travel and outdoor plans from the eastern plains to the mountain valleys.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, high temperatures across the plains will climb into the upper 90s Friday under mostly sunny skies. The mountain valleys will reach the mid-80s, while higher elevations stay cooler in the 60s to low 80s. By Saturday, conditions shift rapidly as storm chances increase to 70% in valleys and 90% in mountain areas, with widespread showers and thunderstorms expected.

The agency warns of lightning, heavy rainfall, and possible localized flooding, especially in burn scar regions and low-lying roads. Cities such as Pueblo, Alamosa, and Colorado Springs may see afternoon storms develop Saturday and continue into Sunday, creating hazardous driving conditions along I-25 and mountain passes.

Residents are urged to avoid outdoor activities during peak storm hours, secure loose items, and keep devices charged in case of power outages.

Thunderstorm chances remain elevated into early next week, with daily storm activity likely through Tuesday.
