Pueblo, Colorado – Strong winds and a sharp change in temperatures are expected to impact much of southern Colorado on Friday as a cold front moves across the region, creating hazardous travel conditions and prompting a High Wind Watch for the far southeast plains.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, warmer conditions are expected Thursday before the front arrives, followed by noticeably cooler temperatures and increasing winds on Friday. The strongest winds are forecast across the southeast plains, where sustained winds and powerful gusts could reach levels capable of causing damage and travel disruptions.
A High Wind Watch is in effect Friday from morning through late afternoon for portions of Baca, Bent, Prowers, and Las Animas counties. Gusts may exceed 50 mph, particularly in open areas and along east–west roadways. Blowing dust and reduced visibility are possible, especially for high-profile vehicles traveling along U.S. Highway 50, U.S. 287, and Interstate 25 south of Pueblo.
Across south-central Colorado, including Pueblo, Cañon City, and Colorado Springs, winds will increase behind the front, though gusts are expected to be slightly lower than on the plains. Temperatures will fall quickly during the day Friday, creating a colder and blustery feel by afternoon.
Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor objects, use caution while driving, and prepare for rapidly changing conditions. Those with travel plans across the southeast plains should monitor conditions closely, especially during peak wind hours.
Winds are expected to gradually ease Friday evening, though cooler temperatures will linger into the weekend. The National Weather Service notes that watches may be upgraded to warnings if confidence increases, and additional updates are expected as the front moves through.
