PUEBLO, Colo. – Scattered thunderstorms are expected to build over Colorado’s mountains and interior valleys Thursday afternoon, bringing lightning, brief heavy rain, and small hail to parts of the San Juan range. The National Weather Service in Pueblo said sub-tropical moisture is pushing north, fueling the potential for moderate downpours over the eastern San Juan Mountains and along the Continental Divide.

According to the NWS Pueblo office, the greatest storm risk will develop between late morning and early evening Thursday, especially over higher elevations west of Alamosa, Durango, and Pagosa Springs. Some storms could drift east toward the I-25 corridor by sunset, producing gusty winds and isolated lightning strikes. Forecasters urge hikers, campers, and anyone recreating outdoors to move to shelter at the first sign of thunder.

The weather service noted that temperatures will climb several degrees above Wednesday’s readings, with highs reaching the 80s across the plains from Pueblo to La Junta, and 70s in most mountain towns. While widespread flooding is not expected, brief heavy rainfall in steep terrain could trigger minor runoff near burn scars and small creeks.

Travelers along U.S. 160 and I-25 should stay alert for reduced visibility and slick pavement during any stronger cells. Residents are advised to secure outdoor items and monitor local alerts, as additional rounds of isolated storms may linger into Friday.
