Pueblo, Colorado – A weather advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service for southern Colorado due to strong winds expected on Tuesday, February 16. Wind gusts of 50 to 60 mph are forecast for the plains, with gusts as high as 70 to 80 mph in the mountains. Combined with low humidity levels, these conditions will create critical fire weather across the region, with an elevated risk of wildfire spread, especially in dry areas near major highways like I-25 and I-70.

The NWS warns that the powerful winds will also produce blowing dust, potentially reducing visibility to near zero, especially along open stretches of roadway. Travelers on routes such as I-25, I-70, and I-90 should be prepared for dangerous driving conditions, particularly in rural or less-developed areas where blowing dust could obstruct sightlines.

In addition to the fire risk and dust, strong winds have the potential to cause significant property and wind damage. Officials recommend securing outdoor items that could be blown away and avoiding any outdoor activities that may spark a fire, such as grilling, parking on grassy areas, or using power equipment that may produce sparks.

Residents are reminded to avoid fireworks and exercise caution when driving in these conditions. The NWS urges that no outdoor burning should take place during this time. Be sure to stay updated with weather alerts, especially if planning to travel on the plains or through the mountain passes, where wind gusts will be even stronger.
