Pueblo, Colo. – Strong winds and dry air will elevate wildfire danger along the Interstate 25 corridor by late Tuesday morning, with critical fire conditions developing between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, a Red Flag Warning is in effect from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday for portions of the southeast plains, including areas near Pueblo, Walsenburg and Trinidad. Gusty winds combined with low relative humidity will create conditions where any spark could spread rapidly.
Communities along I-25 and US-50 face the greatest concern during the afternoon hours. Wind gusts could exceed 30 mph at times, especially south of Pueblo toward Las Animas and Huerfano counties. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and residents should secure trailer chains, avoid parking on dry grass and properly dispose of cigarettes.
While the plains contend with fire danger, a passing front will bring cooler temperatures and a shift in conditions later Tuesday. Scattered rain showers may develop across lower elevations by late afternoon, with snow expected in the mountains west of I-25, including the Wet Mountains and Sangre de Cristo range.
Travelers along I-25 should remain alert for sudden crosswinds, particularly in open stretches of highway. High-profile vehicles may experience difficult driving conditions during peak gusts.
Fire danger will gradually diminish after 5 p.m. as temperatures fall and winds ease. Additional weather statements could be issued if conditions intensify before the front moves through later Tuesday.
