Pueblo, Colorado – Wind gusts up to 60 mph and humidity in the teens could increase fire danger along Interstate 25 Monday and Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, dry fuels, low humidity values in the low to mid-teens, and strong gusty winds are expected to develop across the region Monday morning and continue into early evening hours. Stronger winds are forecast Tuesday, with gusts potentially reaching 60 mph.

A Fire Weather Watch is in effect beginning Monday morning and again Tuesday morning into the evening hours for portions of southern Colorado, including areas along and east of the Interstate 25 corridor.

Forecasters say strong winds across the plains may generate areas of blowing dust, significantly reducing visibility at times. Crosswinds may create hazardous conditions for high-profile vehicles along I-25, U.S. Highway 50, and U.S. 287.

In addition to reduced visibility, the combination of strong winds and low humidity could allow any fire starts to spread rapidly and erratically. Officials warn that these conditions may also result in isolated wind damage.

Communities including Pueblo, Colorado Springs, La Junta, and Trinidad should prepare for elevated fire danger and difficult travel conditions, particularly during peak wind periods in the afternoon hours.

Truck drivers, commuters, and outdoor workers may experience sudden wind gusts and rapidly changing visibility on open stretches of highway.

Residents are encouraged to avoid outdoor burning, secure loose objects, and monitor forecast updates as wind speeds and humidity levels are refined.
