Pueblo, CO – Critical fire weather conditions are expected Monday and Tuesday across southern Colorado, with wind gusts up to 60 mph possible near Interstate 25.
According to the US National Weather Service in Pueblo, dry fuels combined with low humidity levels in the low to mid-teens and strong gusty winds will create elevated to critical fire danger conditions. Fire Weather Watches are in effect Monday morning and afternoon, and again Tuesday morning into the evening.
Forecasters say the strongest winds are expected Tuesday, when gusts could reach 60 mph, particularly across the plains along I-25, U.S. Highway 50, and surrounding roadways. In addition to wildfire concerns, areas of blowing dust may develop, significantly reducing visibility at times.
Communities including Colorado Springs, Pueblo, La Junta, and Trinidad could experience rapidly changing conditions if fires ignite. Officials warn that any new fire starts may spread quickly and erratically under the forecast wind speeds.
The combination of dry air, dormant winter fuels, and strong winds increases the potential for wind-driven fire behavior across the region.
Drivers along I-25 and US-50 should prepare for sudden visibility reductions due to blowing dust, especially Tuesday afternoon.
Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning and secure loose outdoor items ahead of the strongest wind period.
