Pueblo, Colorado – A Red Flag Warning is in effect through Tuesday evening as strong winds and very low humidity create critical fire conditions across southern Colorado.
According to the US National Weather Service in Pueblo, southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph are expected Monday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Minimum relative humidity levels could drop as low as 10 percent.
Conditions are expected to intensify Tuesday, when west winds of 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph are forecast between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Humidity values are again expected to fall to around 10 percent, significantly increasing the potential for rapid fire spread.
The warning covers a broad portion of the region, including Pueblo, Colorado Springs, La Junta, Trinidad, and surrounding communities.
Drivers along Interstate 25 and US Highway 50 should be prepared for strong crosswinds, especially in open areas. Blowing dust or smoke from any grassfires could reduce visibility quickly. High-profile vehicles may be particularly vulnerable during peak wind periods Tuesday afternoon.
Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning and any activities that could produce sparks, including welding or operating equipment in dry grass. Fires that start under these conditions may spread rapidly and become difficult to contain.
The most dangerous fire weather conditions are expected during the afternoon and early evening hours both days.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from local authorities and the National Weather Service as conditions remain critical through Tuesday.
