Pueblo, Colorado – Wind gusts up to 35 mph and humidity levels dropping as low as 15 percent will heighten wildfire danger along I-25 and US-50 through 6 p.m. Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect late Friday morning through early evening for portions of southern Colorado, especially near the southeast mountains and adjacent plains. The strongest winds will develop closer to the higher terrain, but dry air will overspread lower elevations, including Pueblo and Walsenburg.

Any spark could spread quickly in cured grasses. Drivers along I-25 from Pueblo south toward Trinidad should avoid dragging trailer chains and use caution with equipment that may produce sparks. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged.

Conditions improve over the weekend as winds ease and temperatures remain seasonably mild. Highs Saturday and Sunday will generally range from the 50s to upper 60s across the I-25 corridor, with slightly cooler air slipping into the southeast plains by Sunday.

Attention then turns to an active weather pattern next week. The first storm system is expected Tuesday into Wednesday morning, bringing a quick shot of rain to lower elevations and snow to higher terrain. While widespread heavy totals are not expected at this time, some locations could see at least 0.25 inch of liquid precipitation.

Additional systems may follow late next week, though track and intensity remain uncertain. Residents should stay weather-aware as fire danger transitions to potential precipitation impacts in the days ahead.
