Pueblo, Colo. – A severe thunderstorm is moving across southern Colorado Tuesday afternoon, bringing dangerous hail and damaging winds to Conejos and Costilla counties. Vehicles, roofs, and trees could see the brunt of the impact as quarter-size hail pelts the area and gusts reach 60 mph.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, the storm was spotted around 2:42 p.m. MDT about nine miles northwest of Mesita, tracking northeast at 10 mph. Officials warned the system will remain mostly over rural parts of southwestern Costilla and eastern Conejos counties, but damage to vehicles and structures is expected.

The San Luis Valley Airport area and surrounding communities may see reduced visibility and slick roads as hail and wind sweep through. Emergency officials urge residents to move indoors immediately, away from windows, and shelter in the lowest level of their homes until the warning expires.

Travelers in southern Colorado should use caution, as fast-changing conditions may make roads hazardous. More warnings are possible if the storm strengthens or spawns additional cells later this evening.

Severe Thunderstorm Warnings remain in effect for parts of southern Colorado until Tuesday afternoon.
