Pueblo, CO – Unseasonably warm temperatures combined with gusty winds and low humidity are creating dangerous fire weather conditions across southeastern Colorado on Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, a Red Flag Warning is in effect from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday for the southeast mountains and adjacent southern plains. Near-record high temperatures are possible in some locations, increasing the potential for rapid wildfire growth if a fire starts.

Forecasters say breezy afternoon winds and very low relative humidity will significantly elevate fire danger throughout the warned area. These conditions can allow fires to ignite easily and spread quickly, especially in areas with dry vegetation.

High temperatures Monday are expected to climb well above seasonal averages across the plains and mountain valleys. While specific wind speeds were not listed, the National Weather Service emphasized that wind combined with dry air will be sufficient to create critical fire weather conditions.

Roadways including I-25, US-50, CO-96, and US-287 pass through areas under the Red Flag Warning. Motorists traveling through southeastern Colorado are urged to use caution, as vehicle-related sparks or roadside activities can ignite fires under these conditions.

The National Weather Service advises avoiding activities that could start a wildfire, including tossing cigarette butts, outdoor burning, campfires, grilling, off-road travel, welding, or operating machinery that produces sparks.

Emergency officials stress that fires starting during Red Flag conditions can become difficult to control in a short period of time, posing risks to nearby communities, infrastructure, and transportation corridors.

Residents, outdoor workers, and travelers are encouraged to remain alert, follow local fire restrictions, and monitor updates from the National Weather Service and local authorities throughout the day.
