Pueblo, Colorado – A High Wind Watch is in effect Tuesday across southern Colorado as powerful winds up to 80 mph threaten travel, power lines and wildfire conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, west to southwest winds of 30 to 40 mph are expected across much of the region, with gusts reaching 55 to 65 mph over the San Luis Valley and eastern plains. Higher elevations could see gusts between 75 and 80 mph.

The strongest winds are forecast Tuesday afternoon and evening, producing areas of blowing dust and sharply reduced visibility, especially across open portions of the eastern plains. High-profile vehicles may experience difficult travel conditions along Interstate 25, U.S. Highway 50 and other east-west routes.

Forecasters warn that damage to trees and power lines is possible. At the same time, relative humidity values are expected to drop to around 10% in many areas, combining with very dry fuels to create broad critical fire weather conditions.

Communities including Pueblo, Alamosa, La Junta and Trinidad are expected to see significant wind impacts. Fire officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning and activities that could create sparks.

The dangerous combination of strong winds and low humidity could affect commuters, ranchers and freight traffic throughout the region Tuesday.
