Fort Wayne, IN – A Fort Wayne man was taken into custody Monday evening following a mental health crisis that prompted a large police response and public safety alert.
According to a release from the Fort Wayne Police Department (FWPD), officers responded around 3:30 p.m. to the 1400 block of Kitch Street after receiving reports of an armed individual suffering from a mental health episode. Officers attempted to de-escalate the situation and convince the subject to exit the home for a mental health evaluation.
When initial efforts failed, the Emergency Services Team (EST), Crisis Response Team (CRT), and the Ariel Support Unit (ASU) were deployed to assist. The department also issued an IPAWS alert via the cellular network, urging residents to avoid the area.
Just before 7 p.m., the subject was taken into custody by the EST without injury and will be transported to a local hospital for evaluation. Police confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public.
The identity of the individual has not been released.
