Providence, Rhode Island – A steady winter snow event will move into southern New England late tonight, bringing accumulating snow and slippery travel through much of Sunday. The timing targets overnight hours and much of the daytime Sunday period, increasing the likelihood of ongoing road impacts.
Snow is expected to begin around 10 p.m. this evening and continue through Sunday afternoon before tapering off near or after sunset. Total accumulations of 2 to 4 inches are expected across southern Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts, including the Providence metro, coastal Rhode Island, and Cape Cod. Snowfall rates should remain light to moderate, but persistence will allow snow to steadily build on untreated surfaces.
According to the National Weather Service office in Boston/Norton, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 10 p.m. tonight through 7 p.m. Sunday for southern and eastern Massachusetts and all of southern Rhode Island, including Providence, Warwick, Cranston, Newport, Narragansett, Westerly, New Bedford, Fall River, and Plymouth. Dukes and Nantucket counties are also included, where snow-covered roads may linger into Sunday evening.
Travel conditions are expected to deteriorate overnight and remain slick throughout Sunday, especially on secondary roads, bridges, and overpasses. According to state transportation officials, crews will treat main routes, but steady snowfall may keep roads snow-covered at times. Drivers should reduce speeds, increase following distance, and allow extra time for travel, particularly Sunday morning and midday.
Pedestrians should also use caution on sidewalks and steps, where snow can compact and become slippery. With temperatures remaining cold, melting will be limited until snowfall ends late Sunday.
Conditions gradually improve Sunday night as snow tapers off and crews catch up on cleanup.
