Providence, Rhode Island – Strong and potentially damaging winds are impacting the Providence area as a Wind Advisory remains in effect until 1 a.m. Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service in Boston/Norton reports sustained west winds of 10 to 20 miles per hour, with gusts reaching up to 50 miles per hour, across Rhode Island, including Providence. These conditions are expected to persist through late Tuesday night before gradually weakening early Wednesday morning.

As of early Tuesday, temperatures near T.F. Green International Airport were around 29 degrees, with wind chills dropping into the teens at times due to the strong winds. Skies remain mostly cloudy, and while no significant precipitation is expected during the advisory period, the combination of cold air and gusty winds will make conditions feel harsher.

Forecasters warn that the strong winds may blow around unsecured objects, break tree limbs, and lead to isolated power outages, particularly in areas where trees remain stressed from recent weather. The risk is elevated for coastal and exposed locations.

Travel may be difficult at times, especially for high-profile vehicles on bridges, elevated roadways, and open highways. Drivers are urged to reduce speed, maintain firm control of their vehicles, and remain alert for debris on roadways.

Residents are encouraged to secure outdoor items, including trash bins, holiday decorations, and patio furniture. Pedestrians should use caution near trees, power lines, and construction areas where falling debris is possible.

Winds are expected to gradually diminish after midnight, with calmer conditions developing early Wednesday. While colder air will remain in place, no additional hazardous weather is expected to meet warning criteria later this week.

Officials advise monitoring updated forecasts and alerts as conditions evolve.
