Providence, Rhode Island – Drivers across Providence and much of Rhode Island should prepare for increasingly hazardous travel conditions Sunday as a steady snowfall develops late in the morning and continues into the overnight hours.
According to the National Weather Service office in Boston/Norton, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 10 a.m. Sunday through 4 a.m. Monday for Providence County and all of Rhode Island, along with southeastern Massachusetts. Snow accumulations of 3 to 5 inches are expected, with localized areas seeing up to 6 inches, enough to significantly impact road conditions.
In Providence, snowfall is expected to intensify Sunday afternoon, with streets, bridges, and highway ramps becoming slick by mid to late day. Travel along I-95, I-195, Route 6, and Route 10 could slow considerably as snow continues into the evening. Communities including Warwick, Cranston, East Greenwich, Newport, and Westerly may see heavier bursts of snow at times, especially after sunset.
Transportation officials urge motorists to slow down, leave extra space between vehicles, and plan for longer travel times. Those with evening or overnight travel plans should be prepared for snow-covered roads and reduced traction. Pedestrians are also advised to use caution on untreated sidewalks and steps.
The advisory extends into early Monday morning, and lingering slick spots could affect the start of the commute. Weather officials note that additional updates or advisories may be issued if snowfall totals trend higher or conditions worsen overnight.
