Boone, NC – A winter weather advisory has been issued for northwest North Carolina, southwest Virginia, and southeast West Virginia, starting at midnight tonight. A wintry mix of freezing rain, sleet, and snow is expected to create hazardous travel conditions through Sunday morning.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), freezing rain will be the main concern, with ice accumulations of up to one-tenth of an inch likely. Snow or sleet may briefly mix in but will total less than an inch. The advisory spans areas west of I-77, including Boone, Wytheville, and Bluefield.
Slippery roads and possible ice accumulation on trees could impact morning commutes. NWS advises drivers to slow down, use caution, and check road conditions by dialing 511. The advisory is set to expire by noon Sunday, but lingering icy patches may persist in shaded areas.
Residents should prepare by ensuring vehicles are winter-ready and staying updated on weather alerts. Consider delaying travel plans until conditions improve.
