Pendleton, OR — Eastern Oregon residents are advised to prepare for strong winds and challenging travel conditions starting Monday afternoon, as a High Wind Watch has been issued for the region. Gusts could reach up to 65 mph across areas including the Gorge, Simcoe Highlands, and Kittitas Valley, lasting through Tuesday morning. Drivers are urged to exercise caution, especially along major routes where gusts could impact high-profile vehicles.

According to the National Weather Service, this high wind event stems from an upper-level trough and frontal system that will bring intense winds primarily to eastern parts of Oregon. The watch covers routes such as I-84, where conditions may be particularly hazardous for trucks and light vehicles due to gusty crosswinds. Travelers should plan ahead by checking the latest conditions and preparing for possible delays.

In addition to the high winds, the week ahead brings a mixed bag of weather. Monday’s forecast includes rain and breezy conditions, with daytime temperatures reaching about 55°F. As the rain subsides Monday night, lows will dip to around 37°F. On Tuesday, the forecast calls for a high of 51°F, with a chance of rain continuing in the morning, followed by clearer skies in the afternoon.

Tuesday night brings potential for freezing fog as temperatures fall to 25°F. This may cause slick roadways in the morning hours on Wednesday, when Pendleton can expect clear skies and sunshine, with temperatures reaching a high of 50°F. By Wednesday night, temperatures will drop sharply to around 24°F, leading to clear but chilly conditions.

As the area navigates these shifts, residents should monitor updates from the National Weather Service, secure outdoor items, and prepare for possible power outages due to the high winds. With potential for rapid weather changes, staying informed will be key to remaining safe in Eastern Oregon this week.
