Springfield, IL – A Wind Advisory is in effect across much of central Illinois from 10 a.m. Sunday until 7 a.m. Monday, as strong winds sweep across the region ahead of a powerful storm system.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, sustained south to southwest winds of 25 to 35 mph are expected throughout the day, with gusts reaching 45 to 55 mph in some areas.

Possible Impacts

The strong winds could cause several issues across the region, including:

  • Tree limbs being blown down
  • Isolated power outages
  • Unsecured outdoor objects being blown around
  • Difficult travel for high-profile vehicles such as trucks and SUVs

The strongest gusts are expected across much of central and northern Illinois, where wind speeds could reach the 50–55 mph range.

Travel Concerns

Drivers, particularly those operating large trucks, RVs, and other high-profile vehicles, may experience difficult driving conditions due to strong crosswinds.

Officials are urging residents to secure outdoor furniture, trash bins, and other loose objects before the winds strengthen.

Part of Larger Storm System

The windy conditions are tied to a large storm system affecting much of the central United States, bringing severe storms to the south and winter weather to parts of the northern Plains.

Forecasters say winds will remain strong through the overnight hours before gradually easing Monday morning.
