Poughkeepsie, NY – Sheriff’s Academy recruits in Dutchess County helped recover stolen property and detain a larceny suspect after a holiday package theft on Parker Avenue Monday afternoon.

According to the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred around 1:45 p.m. on December 22, 2025, while Law Enforcement Academy recruits were conducting a physical fitness test on the North Side Trail. A nearby resident alerted the trainees that a package had just been stolen from her front porch.

The victim shared Ring Doorbell footage showing the suspect, allowing recruits to quickly alert academy staff and track down the individual. Evidence, including the stolen property, was recovered nearby after the suspect allegedly tried to discard it.

The City of Poughkeepsie Police Department took custody of the suspect, who was allegedly found with additional stolen items — including Christmas presents for the victim’s children sent by a family member. The property was returned to the victim, and Poughkeepsie police are handling the investigation.

Despite still being in training, the Sheriff’s recruits were praised for their quick action, which officials said prevented a “real-life Grinch” from ruining Christmas for a local family.
