Potsdam, NY – Light to moderate lake-effect snow continues across the northern Adirondack foothills and St. Lawrence Valley this Thanksgiving morning, creating areas of blowing snow and rapidly changing visibility. While totals will be lower than regions closer to Lake Ontario, slick roads and gusty winds will still impact holiday travel.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through 7 p.m. Friday for Southwestern St. Lawrence County, including Potsdam, Gouverneur, and Ogdensburg. Up to 6 inches of snow is possible, with wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph lowering visibility in exposed areas. According to meteorologists, shifting bands may briefly intensify along NY-58, US-11, and rural roads west of Canton. A second advisory begins at 10 a.m. for Southern Franklin County, including Saranac Lake and Tupper Lake, where 3 to 7 inches is forecast. Gusts up to 45 mph near Malone may down small branches and cause blowing snow on stretches of NY-30 and NY-3.
Holiday travelers should reduce speed, watch for drifting on open farmland, and monitor for sudden visibility drops. Keep a winter kit in your vehicle—flashlight, water, food, blankets—if travel is unavoidable. Isolated lake-effect bursts may continue into Friday afternoon before conditions improve Friday night.
