Amarillo, Texas – Showers and thunderstorms are possible this afternoon in the Texas Panhandle, with the most likely time frame between 1 and 7 p.m. Though the chance is not high, the National Weather Service (NWS) warns that any storms that do develop could bring gusty winds up to 40 mph, along with frequent lightning.
According to the NWS, the risk of localized flooding will be a concern in areas that have already experienced rain in recent days, creating saturated grounds. While rainfall totals are expected to be minimal, the combination of heavy downpours and gusty winds could lead to hazardous conditions, particularly for outdoor activities or travel.
Residents are advised to stay alert for changing weather conditions, particularly in areas like Amarillo, Dumas, and Perryton. If thunderstorms occur, take precautions by seeking shelter indoors and avoiding travel if possible, especially on roads prone to flooding.
This storm threat is expected to diminish by early evening, with any additional weather warnings to be issued as conditions develop.
