Portland, Ore. – Dangerous triple-digit heat will grip much of western Oregon starting Sunday afternoon, with conditions expected to linger into early Tuesday. The National Weather Service warns that afternoon highs could climb between 97 and 103 degrees, while nighttime lows remain uncomfortably warm at 60 to 70 degrees.

According to the National Weather Service in Portland, the warning covers the Portland-Vancouver metro, the Willamette Valley, and the western and central Columbia River Gorge, as well as the foothills of the northern and central Oregon Cascades. The prolonged heat, paired with warm nights, significantly increases the risk of heat-related illness, especially for vulnerable populations.

Communities from Hillsboro to Eugene and Vancouver to Hood River could see the most dangerous conditions during late afternoon hours Sunday and Monday. Health officials urge residents to drink plenty of water, avoid strenuous activity during peak heat, and use cooling centers or air-conditioned spaces. Those without air conditioning are advised to close windows and blinds during the day, and open windows overnight unless wildfire smoke is present.

The extreme heat warning remains in effect until 5 a.m. Tuesday, with additional alerts possible if the heat persists.
