Portland, OR – Drivers heading into the Cascades should prepare for treacherous conditions through early Saturday as a significant winter storm continues to dump snow across high elevations in Oregon and southern Washington.
According to the National Weather Service in Portland, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 5 a.m. PDT Saturday for areas above 4,000 feet. The advisory covers the North Oregon Cascades, including Government Camp and Santiam Pass, as well as the South Washington Cascades near Mt. St. Helens and Indian Heaven Wilderness.
Snow totals are expected to reach 8 to 10 inches at pass levels, while elevations above 5,500 feet could see 12 to 16 inches. Wind gusts may hit 35 mph, further reducing visibility and increasing the risk of drifting snow on mountain roads.
State officials warn that bridges and overpasses will likely become slick and hazardous. Chains may be required, and travelers are urged to check road conditions at TripCheck.com in Oregon and wsdot.com in Washington before departing.
Authorities recommend carrying an emergency winter kit with blankets, food, water, and tire chains. Walking conditions in these areas may also be dangerous—extra caution is advised.
