Portland, OR – Gusty and potentially disruptive winds are expected to impact Portland and much of northwest Oregon on Monday as a strong frontal system moves into the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Portland, Monday, December 15, will bring increasing winds across western Oregon and southwest Washington. A Wind Advisory is in effect for the Coast Range and Willapa Hills, where wind gusts could reach 45 miles per hour or higher. While Portland may see slightly lower peak gusts, strong winds are still expected throughout the metro area.
Forecasters warn that gusty winds combined with saturated soils could increase the risk of downed trees and isolated power outages, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours Monday. Recent rainfall has left soils soft, making trees more vulnerable to being uprooted when winds strengthen.
In the Portland area, sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph are possible, with gusts frequently reaching 35 to 45 mph, especially in exposed locations and higher elevations. Coastal and foothill areas are expected to experience the strongest winds.
Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, including holiday decorations, trash bins, and patio furniture. Drivers should use caution, especially on bridges and highways, where sudden gusts could affect high-profile vehicles.
Utility companies are encouraging residents to be prepared for the possibility of brief power outages, particularly in wind-prone neighborhoods. Charging mobile devices ahead of time and having flashlights ready is advised.
The National Weather Service notes that conditions should gradually improve late Monday night into Tuesday as the frontal system moves east. However, additional weather systems are expected later in the week, keeping the forecast active.
Portlanders are encouraged to monitor weather updates and heed local advisories as conditions change throughout Monday.
