Portland, Ore. – A dangerous mix of extreme heat and poor air quality will grip much of northwestern Oregon through Monday evening, with triple-digit temperatures and unhealthy ozone levels creating hazardous conditions across the region.
According to the National Weather Service, Portland is under an Extreme Heat Warning until 11 p.m. Tuesday, with daily highs ranging from 95 to 101 degrees. The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has also extended an Air Quality Advisory for ozone pollution through 8 p.m. Monday, affecting cities from Hillsboro and Salem to Eugene and Springfield.
Health officials warn that high ozone levels can trigger burning eyes, coughing, and severe breathing problems, especially for children, seniors, and people with asthma or heart disease. Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity, use cooling centers, and keep windows closed during peak afternoon hours.
Road crews in the Portland metro and Willamette Valley expect pavement expansion and slick road surfaces from heat stress, while utilities are asking customers to conserve electricity during late afternoons to ease grid strain.
Both the air quality advisory and heat warning are expected to last into early next week, with officials cautioning that additional alerts could be issued if conditions persist.
