Portland, OR – The National Weather Service in Portland has issued a warning for an increased sneaker wave threat along the Oregon Coast from Friday morning, October 17, through Sunday night, October 19, 2025.

Forecasters caution that waves may run up much higher on beaches than normal, creating a risk for anyone walking near the surf zone, rocks, or jetties. Sneaker waves can arrive suddenly and sweep people or pets into the ocean with little warning.

According to the NWS, the elevated threat will continue through the weekend as long-period swells impact the coastline. Conditions may be most hazardous during high tide and on west-facing beaches.

Residents and visitors are urged to keep a safe distance from the water, avoid climbing on rocks or driftwood near the surf, and never turn their back to the ocean.
