Portland, Maine – Widespread snow is expected to move into Maine late Tuesday and continue through Wednesday morning, bringing potential travel impacts along major roadways including Interstate 95 and U.S. Route 1.

According to the U.S. National Weather Service in Gray, snow is forecast to begin Tuesday evening, initially developing across southwest New Hampshire before spreading northeast into Maine overnight. Accumulating snow is expected across much of the state, with general totals of 2 to 5 inches. Higher amounts are possible in localized areas, particularly where heavier snow bands develop.

Forecasters note that while snowfall will generally be light to moderate, heavy snowfall rates are possible at times, especially along the Maine coast and nearby inland areas. Coastal communities such as Portland, Rockland, and areas along U.S. 1 could briefly experience reduced visibility and rapidly snow-covered roads.

The most significant impacts are expected during the Tuesday night overnight hours and the Wednesday morning commute. Travel may become difficult, particularly along I-95 from Portland north through Augusta and Bangor, where untreated roads and ramps could become slick before sunrise.

Interior locations may also see periods of steady snow, while higher-impact areas could receive more than 6 inches where bands persist. Snow is expected to taper off from southwest to northeast during the day Wednesday, with conditions gradually improving by afternoon.

Drivers are urged to use caution if traveling overnight or early Wednesday morning. Slippery roads, snow-covered bridges, and reduced visibility may lead to hazardous driving conditions. Emergency officials recommend allowing extra travel time and checking road conditions before departure.

Commuters, students, and early-morning workers should be prepared for delays Wednesday morning, particularly in urban corridors and coastal routes. While no major winter storm warnings are currently in effect, the National Weather Service advises staying alert for updates as snowfall rates and totals may change.
