Portland, Maine – Accumulating snowfall is expected to impact Portland and much of southern and central Maine Tuesday into Wednesday, potentially affecting holiday travel across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Gray, most areas, including Portland, are forecast to receive 2 to 5 inches of snow as a winter system moves through. A Winter Storm Watch remains in effect for the Midcoast and parts of the interior, where snowfall totals could be higher.
Forecasters note there is uncertainty regarding the development of a secondary low-pressure system offshore. If that system strengthens, snowfall could become more intense, particularly near the Midcoast, where localized totals may exceed 6 inches due to banding.
Snow is expected to begin in southwestern New Hampshire late Tuesday morning, spreading northeast into Maine by the afternoon. The storm is forecast to taper off by Wednesday morning, but snow-covered roads and reduced visibility are likely during the peak travel period.
The NWS highlights that travel could be difficult, especially during Tuesday evening and overnight hours. Roads may become snow-covered quickly where heavier bands develop.
The timing coincides with peak holiday travel, potentially affecting commuters, long-distance drivers, and families traveling for Christmas gatherings.
Residents and travelers are encouraged to monitor forecast updates at weather.gov/gyx/winter and allow extra time for travel as conditions evolve.
