Bangor, Maine – High surf along Maine’s coast is expected to intensify tonight into Friday as Hurricane Erin churns northeast through the Atlantic, sending waves up to 12 feet toward the shoreline. Inland areas will stay dry, with overnight lows dipping into the upper 40s and low 50s.
According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, the main risk comes from long-period swells that can surge farther inland than expected. A High Surf Advisory remains in effect, with impacts stretching from Bar Harbor to Machias and as far east as Eastport. Officials are urging anyone visiting the shore to keep a safe distance from the water and remain alert to rapidly changing surf conditions.
Travelers along Route 1 near the Downeast coast should expect hazardous surf near beaches and rocky outcrops. Harbors such as Cutler and Jonesport may see rough conditions, and boaters are advised to avoid open waters until seas calm by early next week.
The next chance of rain arrives Monday, when a frontal system pushes in from the west. Until then, skies will remain mostly clear inland while surf continues to batter the coastline.
