The Kern County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team was requested to assist and arrived around 2:30 p.m. Authorities began evacuating nearby residents while the suspect continued firing from inside the home. Negotiators attempted to secure a peaceful surrender as specialized equipment was deployed.

By approximately 5:30 p.m., officials said the suspect shot and struck the KCSO “Rook,” an armored tactical vehicle, while remaining barricaded inside. Shortly after, the suspect fled through a window into the backyard.

At about 6 p.m., SWAT operators used a Bearcat armored vehicle to search the yard when the suspect allegedly fired into the vehicle’s driver-side window. Officials said the suspect was armed with a high-powered rifle and a handgun. SWAT personnel returned fire, killing the suspect.

Authorities said the armored vehicles were used to protect deputies and assist in accessing the fortified residence during the incident.

The Visalia Police Department is leading the investigation into the deputy-involved shooting. According to officials, the deputy involved has been placed on routine administrative leave pending the outcome.
