Valparaiso, Indiana – Drivers across Porter County are facing dangerous travel conditions today and tonight as strong winds whip lake effect snow across northwest Indiana, creating slick roads, blowing snow, and rapidly changing visibility through Thursday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Porter County until Thursday morning. Localized snow totals of 2 to 5 inches are expected, with the highest amounts favored in northeast Porter County closer to Lake Michigan. Wind gusts near the lakeshore could reach 50 mph, significantly worsening travel conditions.
In Valparaiso, Portage, and Chesterton, blowing and drifting snow may quickly cover treated roads, especially on west-to-east routes in open areas. Bridges and overpasses are expected to become slick first, while sudden bursts of heavier snow could lead to near-whiteout conditions over short distances.
Gusty winds may also bring down tree limbs, increasing the risk of localized power disruptions and blocked roadways. Travel impacts are expected to continue overnight and into the early Thursday morning commute.
Motorists are urged to slow down, avoid unnecessary travel, and remain alert for rapidly changing conditions during lake effect snow bands. Drivers should allow extra time and keep headlights on during reduced visibility. The advisory remains in effect through Thursday morning, and additional statements could be issued if winds or snow intensity increase.
