Portage, IN – Drivers in Portage will need to plan ahead this week as a key stretch of Swanson Road is shutting down for utility work.
According to the Portage Police Department, Swanson Road between Stone Avenue and Orchard Street will be closed daily from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. beginning Wednesday, September 24, through Tuesday, September 30, 2025. The closure is part of a NIPSCO pole replacement project. Officials noted the schedule is weather-dependent.
The closure affects a busy north-south route near U.S. 6, forcing drivers to take detours. Signs direct traffic to use Lute Road, Willowcreek Road, and U.S. 6 as alternate routes. Local access will still be permitted for residents, but through traffic will not be allowed during the work hours.
Police are urging motorists to allow extra travel time and follow all posted detour signs. The department emphasized that crews will be working in the roadway and drivers should exercise caution in the area.
This closure comes as part of ongoing utility infrastructure upgrades in Porter County. Similar projects may continue into fall, with officials advising residents to monitor city updates for additional traffic impacts.
