Porter County, IN – Residents are being cautioned about an ongoing phone scam involving individuals impersonating law enforcement officers.

According to the Porter County Sheriff’s Department, these fraudulent calls have been reported frequently, with scammers using technology to make it appear as if the calls are originating from police departments or other governmental entities.

The department advises that if anyone receives a call from someone claiming to be a law enforcement officer and feels uncertain about their legitimacy, they should immediately hang up and contact the department directly at 219-477-3170 to verify the caller’s identity. This advice also extends to calls supposedly from officers of other agencies.

The public is reminded that legitimate officers would never demand personal information such as social security numbers, dates of birth, bank account details, or fees to avoid arrest over the phone. The department urges vigilance and caution, emphasizing the importance of directly verifying any such suspicious calls to protect against fraud.
