Portage, IN – A large water main break has forced the indefinite closure of Central Avenue between Vivian and Hamstrom Streets, according to the Portage Police Department.
Officials announced the closure Thursday morning, urging drivers to find alternate routes until further notice. The department did not specify when repairs might be completed, citing ongoing utility issues in the area.
According to police, the break has also disrupted water service, leading to the temporary closure of the Portage Police Department lobby for the day. “Please seek alternative routes for travel,” the department wrote in a social media post.
The closure impacts a key east-west corridor through Portage, which typically handles significant commuter traffic. City crews are expected to assess the damage and begin repair work once the affected line is secured.
Residents and travelers in the area should plan for detours and possible delays while water service and roadway repairs are underway.
