Port Huron, Michigan – A major international travel route is closed Saturday, triggering traffic delays near the Blue Water Bridge.
According to the Port Huron Police Department, Highway 402 in Sarnia, Ontario, is closed in both eastbound and westbound directions due to a significant weather event. The closure has already begun causing traffic backups and delays at the Blue Water Bridge, which connects Port Huron with Sarnia across the St. Clair River.
Police said there is currently no timetable for when Highway 402 will reopen. Officials noted that traffic conditions could worsen as congestion continues to build on both sides of the border, particularly for drivers attempting to access or exit the bridge.
Highway 402 serves as a primary route linking the Blue Water Bridge to Ontario’s highway system. With the roadway closed, traffic is being restricted, slowing cross-border commercial and passenger travel throughout the Port Huron area.
Drivers traveling near the Blue Water Bridge, Interstate 94, and surrounding surface streets are urged to plan ahead, allow additional travel time, and seek alternate routes if possible. Motorists should expect longer-than-normal wait times, especially during peak travel periods.
Authorities emphasized that weather conditions remain a factor in the closure and that reopening will depend on when it is safe to resume travel. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
The advisory is especially relevant for commuters, cross-border workers, and freight drivers who rely on the bridge for daily travel. Students and young workers traveling during daytime hours may also encounter delays when moving through the Port Huron waterfront and downtown areas.
