Port Heiden, Alaska – Life-threatening cold has settled over the Central Alaska Peninsula, with dangerously low wind chills creating serious risks for anyone spending time outdoors in Port Heiden through late week.

According to the National Weather Service in Anchorage, an Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. Thursday for Port Heiden. Northerly winds combined with falling temperatures are producing wind chills between 25 and 35 degrees below zero, cold enough to cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes.

Local officials warn that even short periods outdoors can quickly become dangerous without proper protection. Residents are urged to limit time outside, wear insulated layers, face coverings, and heavy gloves, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Mechanical issues, frozen fuel lines, and vehicle failures are also more likely under these conditions, increasing the risk for anyone traveling or working outside.

Homes and businesses should take steps to protect plumbing, including wrapping exposed pipes, allowing faucets to drip, and draining outdoor water systems. Pets should be kept indoors, and backup heat sources should be checked to ensure safe operation.

Very cold wind chills are expected to persist through midweek before gradual improvement arrives later Thursday. Officials caution that additional cold-related advisories may follow as the prolonged cold pattern continues across the region.
