ATKINS, Ark. – Arkansas State Police (ASP) are investigating a fatal pursuit that ended in Pope County Wednesday evening after a driver allegedly fled from troopers on Interstate 40.

According to ASP, around 4 p.m. on October 22, an officer observed a blue Nissan Versa speeding westbound near Atkins. The driver, identified as Andrea Thompson, 49, reportedly used the interstate shoulder to pass vehicles and nearly collided with other motorists while attempting to elude law enforcement.

Troopers executed a Tactical Vehicle Intervention (TVI) near the 92-mile marker to stop the vehicle. Authorities said the car left the roadway, ejecting the driver. Emergency medical crews responded but pronounced Thompson dead at 5:17 p.m., according to the Pope County Coroner.

ASP’s Criminal Investigation Division (CID) has opened a full investigation into the incident. The driver’s body will be transported to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory for examination.

The pursuit temporarily slowed traffic in the area as crews worked to clear the scene.
