Plum, PA – The Allegheny County Health Department (ACHD) identified the first human case of West Nile virus for 2025 in Pennsylvania’s Plum Borough.
According to the ACHD, the individual who contracted the virus reports that symptoms including fever and malaise began in mid-July. The ACHD has set up additional surveillance and is investigating the area.
Residents should remove standing water sources, use insect repellent, and wear protective clothing to prevent the spread of the virus. Mosquito breeding sites can be reported to the Allegheny County Support Center and the department’s Housing and Community Environment Program.
“Generally, the species of mosquitoes that carry West Nile Virus are active from dusk to dawn,” said Nicholas Baldauf, ACHD Vector Control Specialist. Health officials emphasize that insect repellent is the most effective way to repel mosquitoes and prevent bites.
Most people with symptoms of the virus will recover on their own but officials continue to encourage anyone who believes they may have the virus to consult with a health care provider immediately.
