Platte City, MO – Shoppers at the Walmart on 8551 N. Boardwalk Ave. in Platte City will notice a significantly increased law enforcement presence today as agencies across Missouri join together for the annual Shop with a Deputy event. The long-running tradition brings holiday support to more than 50 local children who might otherwise have little to celebrate this Christmas.
According to the Platte County Sheriff’s Office, officers from the Kansas City Missouri Police Department, Weatherby Lake Police Department, Missouri State Highway Patrol, Missouri Conservation Department, and the Platte County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office are participating in this year’s effort. The program has been active for more than 30 years and is funded entirely through public donations.
Each participating child receives up to $250 to spend, with $150 designated for essential items such as socks, underwear, gloves, and coats. The remaining $100 may be used for toys or personal gifts. Families are also given a food voucher to help ensure a warm holiday meal.
“We are grateful for the public donations that allow this event to not only continue, but grow each year,” Platte County Sheriff Erik Holland said. He also thanked partner agencies and staff who volunteered their time to support the children, as well as Walmart and Hyvee for their ongoing assistance.
Residents visiting the store today may encounter officers accompanying children through the aisles as they select items. The Sheriff’s Office emphasizes that the heightened presence is solely due to the holiday event.
