Plainfield, IL – A weekend fire in a Plainfield townhouse complex left two dogs dead and displaced residents after flames broke out Saturday evening.

According to the Plainfield Fire Protection District, crews were dispatched around 6:29 p.m. Saturday to the 24800 block of Gates Lane for an odor investigation. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered an active fire inside one unit of a multi-unit townhouse building, prompting additional resources to the scene.

Firefighters worked quickly to bring the blaze under control, preventing further spread to neighboring units. Officials said the occupants of the affected residence were not home at the time of the fire. Residents in adjacent units were able to evacuate safely without injury.

Despite the rapid response, two dogs inside the unit died as a result of the fire. Authorities said the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Damage to the residence is estimated at approximately $40,000.

The impacted unit has been deemed uninhabitable, and the Village of Plainfield Building Department has been notified. Multiple agencies assisted in the response, including the Troy Fire Protection District, Romeoville Fire Department, Minooka Fire Protection District, Aurora Township Fire Protection District, and the Montgomery Fire Protection District. The Plainfield Police Department also provided support at the scene.

Fire officials are reminding residents of the importance of working smoke detectors, noting that early warning can be critical during emergencies. Officials say residents typically have less than three minutes to escape once an alarm sounds. Monthly testing and regular battery replacement are strongly encouraged.
