Pittsfield, ME – An early-morning crash on I-95 left one driver dead Tuesday, prompting a two-hour lane closure and an ongoing investigation by Maine State Police.

According to the Maine State Police, the single-vehicle crash occurred at approximately 5:55 a.m. near Mile Marker 143 on the I-95 northbound side in Pittsfield. Troopers arrived to find a 2012 Subaru Impreza lodged in trees in the median after veering off the roadway.

Police said the driver, identified as 56-year-old Rae Hartford of Scarborough, was pronounced dead at the scene. First responders extricated Hartford from the vehicle after the crash caused significant structural damage.

Investigators say preliminary findings indicate that speed and possible intoxication were likely contributing factors. No other vehicles were involved in the crash. Authorities temporarily shut down Lane 1 for about two hours while rescue crews and investigators worked the scene.

Pittsfield Rescue and Blanchard’s Towing assisted state troopers during the response. The vehicle was removed from the median shortly after the roadway reopened.

The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact Trooper Klayton Peckham at 207-973-3700, Ext. 9.

I-95 remains one of the busiest travel corridors in Maine, and Tuesday’s fatal wreck marks another serious crash along the Somerset County stretch of the interstate this fall. Authorities continue to remind drivers to reduce speeds, avoid impaired driving, and take precautions during early-morning travel when visibility and road conditions can increase risks.
