PITTSBURGH – Incubator Productions, a Pittsburgh-based freelance agency and production studio for cartoonists, will return to the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh on Sept. 6 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. for an immersive, interactive class rooted in comic books.
Incubator Productions defines The Mobile Cartoon Museum as a multidisciplinary comics initiative where students learn about the cycle of comic publishing. A professional cartoonist will be on-site to assist students and provide critique.
“Some of the biggest most self-defeating myths about publishing comic books is that you need a publisher,” Isaac Fisher, the Publisher, Director of Incubator Productions, told Pittsburgh Indie Expo. “Self-publishing is how you get your work out there. You are training a skill that is valuable for commercial purposes.”
The company emphasizes that the best way to start making comics is simply by making comics. Programs such as the Mobile Cartoon Museum are among several ways the organization educates and empowers cartoonists.
“We have a workshop element, singing cartoons playing in the background, guided cartoonist activities, and free access to our archives to provide as much insight into the practice as possible,” said Carina Stopenski, archivist and director of the Mobile Cartoon Museum, told PIE.
Incubator Productions also highlights Pittsburgh’s culture. Its traveling exhibit A Slice of Pittsburgh was created in collaboration with Comicsburgh, a collective of Pittsburgh-based comic publishers.
Those interested in cartoons, comics, and video games have free access to Incubator Productions’ official website, which offers lessons year-round and opportunities to engage with cartoonists.
