Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – Drivers north of Pittsburgh could face sudden downpours and strong wind gusts after 3 p.m. Tuesday as storms intensify during the evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, conditions Tuesday afternoon will support strong to severe storms, especially across northwest Pennsylvania. The Storm Prediction Center has placed areas north of I-80, including Erie and Crawford counties, under a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5), while Pittsburgh and surrounding counties remain under a Marginal Risk.

Storms are expected to develop in the late afternoon and continue into the evening, with the main threats including wind gusts up to 60 mph and brief heavy rainfall that could drop visibility below one mile. Travel along I-79, I-80, and Route 19 may be impacted, particularly north of Allegheny County.

Pittsburgh, Washington, and Wheeling may see weaker storms, but isolated strong cells cannot be ruled out. Additional showers and thunderstorms are likely again Wednesday, extending the unsettled pattern.

Residents should secure outdoor items ahead of Tuesday afternoon, monitor alerts, and avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm activity. More watches or warnings could be issued as confidence increases in storm development.
