Pittsburgh, Pa. – Much of western Pennsylvania will stay dry through midweek, but a sharp change is on the way Thursday as a strong cold front pushes through the region, bringing widespread rain and possible thunderstorms.
According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, precipitation chances climb to near 90 percent across much of the region by Thursday morning, with rain likely through the evening commute. The heaviest showers are expected from Butler and Indiana counties south through Pittsburgh and into northern West Virginia.
Travelers on Interstates 79, 70 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike should plan for slower commutes Thursday, with ponding on roads possible during downpours. Localized flooding can’t be ruled out in poor drainage areas. A brief break follows on Friday, though another cold front Saturday may deliver additional scattered showers.
Daytime highs will dip behind the system, falling below seasonal norms by early next week. Residents are urged to keep rain gear handy, charge devices in case of isolated power outages, and allow extra travel time on Thursday.
Rain chances return Saturday, but drier and cooler conditions are expected to settle in by Sunday.
