Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – Bitter cold is tightening its grip on western Pennsylvania, bringing increasingly hazardous travel conditions to the Pittsburgh area as temperatures fall and winds remain elevated. While today is colder than normal, conditions worsen overnight and into Tuesday as single-digit lows and teens for daytime highs combine with strong winds to drive wind chills sharply lower.
According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, very low wind chill values are expected from tonight through at least Tuesday, with the coldest readings occurring during the early morning hours. Gusty winds will amplify the cold, increasing the risk of frostbite and allowing road surfaces to refreeze quickly, even where pavement appears dry.
Roadways including I-376, I-279, I-79, and the Parkway East and West are most vulnerable overnight and during the Tuesday morning commute. Bridges, overpasses, and elevated ramps are likely to develop icy patches as temperatures dip into the single digits. PennDOT officials urge drivers to slow down, leave extra braking distance, and remain alert for black ice, especially before sunrise.
Cold conditions linger into midweek, with wind chills remaining uncomfortably low through Thursday morning. Residents are advised to dress in layers, limit time outdoors, and monitor updates, as additional cold weather advisories may be issued if conditions persist.
