Pittsburgh, PA – The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh is warning residents to brace for record-challenging cold tonight, as temperatures plunge into the low teens — and possibly the single digits in some areas.

Forecasts call for an overnight low near 12°F in Pittsburgh, matching a record set in 1976. Nearby cities could also see historic cold, with expected lows of 11°F in Morgantown, 10°F in DuBois, and 8°F in Butler and New Castle. Wind chills could make it feel even colder, dipping below zero before sunrise Friday.

According to the NWS, several regional records date back to the 1940s–1970s, meaning this Arctic blast could rewrite local climate records. Residents are urged to limit outdoor exposure, protect pets and pipes, and check on elderly neighbors as the extreme cold sets in overnight.

The NWS added that temperatures are expected to remain below freezing throughout Friday, with gradual warming expected into the weekend.
