PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Thunderstorms are expected to intensify across western Pennsylvania this afternoon, bringing the potential for damaging wind gusts and localized flooding through Wednesday evening. Morning showers have already moved through parts of the region, and more storms are likely to follow.
According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, isolated strong to severe thunderstorms could develop mainly this afternoon and evening, with the highest risk over the ridges of southwest Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia. The storms may produce lightning, gusty winds, small hail, and pockets of heavy rain capable of flooding low-lying areas.
Travelers on major routes including I-79, I-70, and the Pennsylvania Turnpike should watch for sudden downpours reducing visibility. Residents are urged to avoid driving through flooded roadways and to secure outdoor objects that could be blown around by strong winds.
The NWS advises monitoring the latest forecasts, as additional warnings could be issued later today if conditions worsen. The threat is expected to diminish overnight, but more unsettled weather may return later this week.
